Requirements
The MA Intercultural Theology programme is open to all candidates holding a Bachelor’s degree in theology, cultural or social anthropology, philology, politics, development studies, or related disciplines. Applicants are expected to articulate a clear academic interest in theology or religious studies in their letter of motivation. In recognition of the international diversity of higher education, there are no mandatory prior course requirements; each application will be assessed on an individual basis.
Admission
Applicants are eligible to apply for the programme upon completion of a Bachelor’s degree, typically comprising six semesters of study, with a minimum of 180 CP.
It is also possible to apply while still enrolled in a Bachelor’s programme, provided that at least 150 CP have been attained by the time of application. In this case, please submit proof of your studies and a preliminary transcript of records. Final degree certificates must be submitted as soon as they become available
Application Period
The first phase of the application period for the M.A. Intercultural Theology (Winter Semester 2026–27) will take place from 1 October to 15 December 2025. This period is open to applicants from both EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA countries worldwide.
However, due to the high number of applications that we receive every year, we highly encourage you to apply as early as possible and not wait until the deadline.
An additional application period will be open from 15 April to 31 May 2026. It is intended for applicants from the EU/EEA, for non-EU/EEA applicants residing in Germany, and, in exceptional cases, for applicants living in countries with faster visa processing times.
Application materials
All application materials have to be completed in English.
The following documents are required:

- Bachelor's degree certificate or equivalent diploma (certified copy and authorized translation in English). Apostille is desirable.
- Bachelor's degree transcript of records (certified copy and authorized translation in English). Apostille is desirable.
- Confirmation that you have written a B.A. thesis with the topic indicated (title page of your Thesis + ca. 10-page extract or a 10-page academic writing)
- Curriculum vitae - Your curriculum vitae should be presented in a tabular format and include details such as family status, denomination or religion, and a comprehensive listing of your educational and professional history. Additionally, it should highlight your interests, skills (including computing and acquired skills), languages, research projects, papers presented, and information about any completed Bachelor or Master thesis, including their titlesCurriculum vitae - Your curriculum vitae should be presented in a tabular format and include details such as family status, denomination or religion, and a comprehensive listing of your educational and professional history. IMPORTANT! Please send a digital copy of your application to intercultural-theology@uni-goettingen.de with the subject line MA ICT Application and Your Surname.
All the application documents should be sent together in one email and the attachments as separate *.pdf files with a title composed as follows: SURNAME_Application form, SURNAME_Bachelor degree, SURNAME_Bachelor transcript, etc. All additional documents should be sent alongwith as one unified *.pdf titled SURNAME_ Additional_documents.
Each application, therefore, must have at least 9 separate documents attached to the email.
N.B.
Applications that are not uploaded in full (including all mandatory documents with the required details of an overall grade or preliminary overall average grade), in due form or by the deadline will be excluded from further proceedings. After sending us the required documents, you will receive a confirmation via email when we have checked if application is complete and forwarded to the admission committee.
Language RequirementsAs all classes are conducted in English, applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency. We accept the TOEFL and IELTS (Academic) tests. Applicants are required to achieve a minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL iBT or 6.0 on the IELTS.

Test scores will be forwarded by the test centres directly to the Georg-August-Universität. Please make sure that your test scores arrive at the university in time to be reviewed with your application.
Please note:
Applicants taking the TOEFL must indicate both the institution code of Georg-August-Universität and the department code of the Faculty of Theology. Scores without the department code cannot be processed.

Fees and Expenses
- Fees and Expenses: approx. 436,36 euros per semester (subject to change). Fees include a semester ticket that allows students to use local trains and buses free of charge.

- Costs of living: Living costs in Göttingen are modest compared to most university cities in Germany. Students are free to choose their preferred dormitory. For international students, we recommend the following dormitory, as the rooms here are fully furnished: Studentenwerk Göttingen: Dormitory Gutenbergstraße 2-42 (Studentendorf)
Scholarships
The University of Göttingen DOES NOT provide scholarships for students. Applicants can apply for financial support to the external scholarship foundations such as Bread for the World (Scholarships | Brot für die Welt), DAAD (Scholarship Database - DAAD - Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), and for the following two scholarship programmes for a small financial support during their studies, namely the Niedersachsenstipendium- The scholarship "Landesstipendium Niedersachsen" - Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and the Deutschlandstipendium- The Germany Scholarship: Recognition and support for outstanding achievements and special commitment
