In Memoriam Prof. Ran Hirschl
The Faculty of Social Sciences is deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Ran Hirschl, PhD, who died on May 19, 2026, following a serious illness. Ran Hirschl was affiliated with the faculty from 2016 to 2021 as an Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Comparative Constitutional Studies at the Department of Political Science. He was regarded as one of the world’s leading scholars in the field of comparative constitutional studies. A detailed and comprehensive tribute to him has been written by colleagues at the University of Toronto, where Ran Hirschl most recently worked.

Award for Diversity and Equal Opportunity
For the first time, the University of Göttingen has awarded a prize for outstanding commitment to diversity and equal opportunity in the areas of counseling, leadership, and university culture. From the many nominations, the jury selected two recipients: Kirsten Brockelmann-Grabo, head of the Examinations Office at the Faculty of Social Sciences, received the award in the “Counseling” category. The award in the “University Culture” category went to the student group “Break the Bloody Taboo.” The awards ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026—the nationwide Diversity Day of the Diversity Charter—at the Forum Wissen.

New in Goettingen in April 2026: Prof. Dr. Andreas Weich
In April 2026, Andreas Weich took over the Educational Science division, specializing in digital educational media, at the Institute of Educational Science. The professorship was established in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media/Georg Eckert Institute (GEI). His work focuses on the mediality and materiality of educational media.

Mission statement for teaching and learning
The University of Göttingen has summarized its understanding of good teaching in a mission statement for teaching and learning. This mission statement was developed in a broad, university-wide, participatory process involving teachers, students, and members of the academic administration.

Research funding
The faculty subsidizes applications for funding for doctoral studies and the post-doctoral phase, as well as applications for funding for internationalization. The Research Commission decides on the applications received.

Dissertation defense and habilitation dates
Approximately 10 students complete their doctorates at the Faculty of Social Sciences each year, and 1-2 people obtain their habilitation. The dates of public university disputations and lectures can be found here.
